Awesome

I've enjoyed this series. I'm always eager to get to the next one to "drop back into" the lives of the characters whom I feel so familiar with. They seem like friends and family. This one was great, but short compared to the others. I was disappointed it had to end. Looking forward to see what happens next to my "friends".

This series is second or third only to such titles as "Tipping the Velvet,"and "Patience & Sarah." There are many wonderful characters, including the two principal protagonists, Ryan and Jamie, whose adventures, over time, are worth reading about. I recommend reading all 18 of the installments completed thus far, as well as those still to be written.

Spiral binding is a bad choice, but the book is great!

The spiral binding came apart almost immediately and I had to continuously fight to keep the pages together. I ended up losing quite a few of the pages from the binding all together and was unable to put them back into place, so the book basically became a stack of small little papers. I would definitely recommend getting the paperback or an electronic version if possible over the spiral-bound version that I got.

The book is great in terms of content though. The book has recommendations for all sorts of different populations, which is extremely helpful when working with someone with comorbidites that you have to keep in mind. Though unless someone referenced a page number for me in class, I had a relatively hard time finding this information when looking for it. Recommendations are also made by gender and age so you can be very precise when going into testing about goals for maximal performance and afterwards putting them into a percentile.

Good for everyone.

Don't listen to the meat-heads at the gym. Do some research, and read this book. Easy enough to anyone wanting to get into shape to use. Good guidelines and precautions for any condition, pregnancy, diabetes, and older adults. Plenty of actual research to back up the suggestions inside, not just some gym rat's opinion.

This is an awesome manual - I'll probably keep it forever. ACSM is one of the leading fitness professional organization and you can feel confident that they have the most up-to-date and accurate information available. It is a fairly easy read compared to the typical 500+ page textbook. The only reason it gets 4 out of 5 stars is because within a month of getting it, the spiral-bound cover had already slipped off. Still a great value!

Much better than a tour!

I am so glad I started reading this book a few months before our trip to Rome. Although I have never been much of a "Art History Enthusiast," this resource will make your visit to the Vatican Museum more meaningful. Even if you don't plan to visit the VM anytime soon, it's a great resource for those who want art and history to co-mingle and come alive!

It is easy to confuse the distinction between male and female speech. In recent times, many visitors have come to the reservation who attempted to use greetings and acknowledgments without learning the proper usage from local Lakota speakers. One time, in an inipi ceremony (a purification ceremony), a woman was visiting the lodge. Every time the Medicine Man prayed or made a comment, she responded loudly, "Hau, hau," instead of saying, "To!" or "Haye!" like the other women. As the Medicine Man continued with his prayers, he expressed a message from the spirits and this woman responded loudly, saying, "Hokahe," a male expression meaning "Let's go. It's time to start." The Medicine Man couldn't control himself any longer. He started to laugh and almost forgot to convey the rest of the messages.

Three stars for effort

As wimpy as this sounds, I agree with both the five-star and one-star reviews. As a pronunciation guide and cultural primer, this book rocks. It's clear that the author holds his language in high regard and wants to keep it alive and "pure". This fight for purity (purging words that have become a type of reservation slang) is usually a losing battle - just talk to William Safire or the French Academy. Anyway, the book presents excellent explanations of the meaning of words and the Lakota way of life. What it lacks is completeness and a true under5sanding of language learning. White Hat and some reviewers here seem to think that Lakota is somehow unique and that learning it is different from other languages. Vine Deloria's introduction would have us believe that grammar is the invention of the white man, or some such nonsense. All languages have grammar, and there's precious little grammatical explanation in this book. Often, verbs are presented only in the third person (he, she, it), which means that you have no idea about how to say I X or you X correctly. He never gets to the level of a complete explanation of object pronouns, so I can see IT, but never YOU. I would recommend Buechel's grammar to complement this book. Buechel will never teach you to pronounce correctly, or the cultural significance behind certain words, but he'll give you all the nuts and bolts. This book (with the CD's) is the best guide to actually pronouncing the language correctly. If you're just curious about Lakota, get this book. If you want to learn it, get this book and Buechel's grammar, to get the full picture.

Definitely a cut above.

First let me say I am NOT into YA fiction as a rule. Second, I am really starting to tire of the genre that simply rides Harry Potter's coattails. Thankfully, this was far from it. A beautifully fleshed out universe, an original take on our world and the next, and fantastic use of historical reference (namely, the alchemists of yore). None of the characters were annoying (a rarity in this genre!), rather each were a delight to follow through the story. Lastly, I thank the author for never insulting my intelligence with neither cliches nor ham-handedness. I am very much looking forward to the sequel.

If you like Madeleine L'Engle, you will no doubt enjoy this book.

Spellbinding!

This was a cute book that I read in a few hours, as I didn't want to set it down. Belladonna makes a good heroine, and I enjoyed her growing friendship with Steve and how they learned to work together. They were joined in their adventure by Elsie, one of the few remaining ghosts left.

One minor thing that annoyed me is how almost every child in YA fiction would rather jump into the deep end rather than ask adults for help. Granted, Belladonna's grandmother and aunt kept blowing her off when she tried to talk to them, but I'm sure they would have listened had she told them the important information!

I did like that Belladonna, Steve, and Elsie did not have all the answers and seemed like believable 12 year olds, getting cranky when things didn't work out and bickering at each other when they were frustrated and tired. Even though Elsie was a ghost, she was still a girl and I enjoyed the trio's growing friendship.

Gave this one a 4/5 rating as I enjoyed the story, liked the characters, and thought that overall it was well done. There were a few references I'm not sure the 9-12 age group would understand (Paladin, the Wild Hunt, oracles, etc.) but they can always check online. I'm looking forward to a sequel, as Ms. Stringer left the ending open enough for another adventure! If you enjoy YA books at all, I recommend this one!

Congratulations. You Just Found a Hidden Gem

If you walk into any bookstore with a decent independent reader/ya section you find more or less the same selection: Garth Nix (Keys to the Kingdom series, Seventh Tower series, Troubletwister series), Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson, the Kane Chronicles), Flanagan (Ranger's Apprentice series), Delaney (Spook's Apprentice series), Harry Potter, Mull (Fablehaven books), and a smattering of others. You are not likely to find this book or its sequel. Don't really know why. Luckily, you have now found it here.

Belladonna Johnson sees ghosts, just like her Mom did, and her Aunt and grandmother do. In fact, she lives "alone" with her recently deceased Mom and Dad. Problem is, "the doors are closing" and her family, and all the ghosts she usually encounters, are disappearing. Something very serious is wrong, and something will have to be done about it.

There's no point in describing the plot much further, because that is not what makes this book so appealing. The appeal is that this book is remarkably well written. The characters are sharp, distinct and memorable. The descriptions are crisp and clever, and never overwrought or artsy or amateurish. The book can be creepy, or exciting, or scary, or funny, and it's always appropriate and never overdone.

The book is reminiscent of Eva Ibbotson, whose asides could be a little too coy, but who invariably brought a certain zest to the storytelling. That's what you get here.

And the big bonus is the heroine. She is smart and observant. She is also a tween girl, and you get a taste of that as well. Her sidekick, Steve, is also a strong character in his own right, so you don't get a one-note or "girl's book" vibe as you read. The overall effect is cheerful, sometimes wickedly funny, and exciting. Can't ask for much more than that.

Not good on the kindle. better interface on vitalsource bookshelf...

The content of book itself is great. however I would recommend buying it in vitalsource bookshelf format as I had to go back and do. It is a far better user format for a book of this size and scope. I had bought kindle books before (for macbook and iPhone) but was rather limited in my experience with them. In this book, there is no search function ("X-ray"as I just found out it was called) or page numbers to reference when they are listed in class. This really hurts the functionality of a textbook of this size. I realized this totally limits the use of a kindle in this fashion. It actually makes the book purchased quite useless. I called to to ask for a refund based on these issues, but because it was greater than 7 days, I could not obtain one. The employee said "it is assumed the entire book can be read in 7 days" so they would not issue one. I reminded her that this was a 600 page printed college textbook designed to be read over a 4 month semester and that my class started after I bought the book. Despite this, she still insisted it is assumed I read it in 7 days. Very pleasant customer service rep but the logic regarding the product they were selling and it's use lacked some common sense. sorry, last kindle textbook for me.

Nowhere did the description disclose that this was the international edition. The picture sure didn't. Even states on the cover Not authorized for sale in US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, or Virginia Islands. I hope it is close enough to the version I assumed I was ordering to compete my class.

Not the best for beginning nursing research classes

I'm sure this is a good resource for some nursing research classes, but as a required text for my nursing research class, it did not provide the information I needed to complete assignments. This is more a school issue rather than a book issue. There are other nursing research books out there that explain things in a manner which is easier for the novice nurse researcher to interpret. Because I needed to find other sources which explained things in a manner that was easier to interpret I'm giving the book three stars. It has lots of information, but if you are new to nursing research it doesn't use language which is effective at helping the learner grasp concepts easily.

Hall, a concerned parent, and Moats, a Harvard-educated teacher, have written a well-intentioned resource for parents concerned about children who have difficulty reading. While they address the need to read aloud to children as infants, their book focuses primarily on the needs of preschool and elementary school children. The authors recommend early exposure to reading in order to aid children in their cognitive development and familiarize them with a wide range of vocabulary, the structure of printed words, and story development. A discussion of the phonics vs. whole-language approaches is provided. This work complements Lucy Caulkins's Raising Lifelong Learners: A Parent's Guide (LJ 10/1/97) and Bernice Cullinan's Read to Me: Raising Kids Who Love to Read (Scholastic, 1992), among others. Parents Can and Need to be Part of Reading Education

In today's world, reading is an essential component in a very competitive, highly technological society. More and more parents should be making efforts to advocate for quality reading programs in their schools. This book by Hall and Moats is a comprehensive guide for parents about current researched based practices in teaching reading. Susan Hall has traveled the road as a parent of a child who had difficulty learning to read. Louis Moats, Ed.D has extensive experience in the field of reading as an educator, researcher, consultant and writer.
The book has been divided into three parts: 1. Background Information - all the information you need to make informed judgments and decisions about your child's reading instruction, whole language vs. phonics. 2. What Parents Can Do To Help Their Child - numerous explicit activities and games to support you child's progress in reading. 3. When Reading is Difficult - discussion about disabilities vs. poor instruction; learning disabilities and dyslexia.
Like James Cunningham, these authors attempt to create an 'aha' moment with the reader by drawing analogies to other professions (e.g. physicians, lawyers, accountants) regarding consumer expectations for quality and know-how. "Best practices" in education as in other fields should not only be reasonable but mandatory. It is my belief that the Dept. of Ed. in MA is making attempts toward this through their recertification process. Though they can advocate and require accountability for performance, they cannot control how the individual school districts choose to implement these policies. "Children's needs shouldn't have to take a back seat to adult professional egos." All the more reason for parents to know, understand and advocate for `good instruction'. Limited resources are available geared toward the public about reading research which makes this book extremely valuable to parents. It's 'reader friendly' way to become
acquainted with proven research based methods of reading instruction definitely creates 'aha' moments.
The authors have skillfully used clear and concise charts throughout the book to highlight main points. They have also included a fascinating historical timeline of Reading Instruction from the 1700's-1997 which is sure to amuse, confuse, and enlighten the reader. As parents of school age children we need to be reminded that `just because we learned one way' doesn't necessarily mean it was the best way. The authors also tell the reader to BEWARE - "All that goes by the name of `phonics' is not equally effective." and take CAUTION when you hear - "balanced reading program." The 'buzzwords'- sequential, systematic, explicit are carefully defined and seven instructional components of a good reading curriculum are described in detail.
Beyond creating more informed parents, four chapters have been written to empower the parent by providing detailed activities to do at home, benchmarks to gauge your child's progress, as well as recommended books for your child. I believe the authors have encouraged the kind of parent involvement that fosters a powerful partnership between school and home. This sense of collaboration and communication between home and school is further encouraged as the authors discuss assessments and various structured Multi-sensory Phonic Programs, developed for children with reading disabilities. Parents are urged to question "developmental lag" labels, seek early intervention and know "best practices".
As an educator and a parent of children who have struggled with learning to read, I was encouraged by the authors ease to communicate to parents. Their ability to clearly describe the intricate process of reading and artfully repeat the most crucial message, the use of systematic code instruction -phonics, is commendable. However, I was equally troubled by their lack of optimism in our schools to adopt "best practices" in reading instruction. I would encourage parents, teachers, and administrators to read this book with the mind set of understanding `how' to teach rather than `what' to teach. I urged a bit of caution as to the authors' recommendation on "Hooked on Phonics". Hall and Moats have done an admirable job of giving parents the tools and information they need to seek and participate in good reading instruction for their children.

Reid Lyon's introduction to this book provides a clear description of this helpful resource: "It is unusual that a book about reading written for parents can be informative, understandable, and true to the scientific basis for understanding reading. To my knowledge, this book is the first of its kind. The scientific research in reading has progressed to the level that dissemination of critical findings to a child's most important teacher-the parents-is not only possible but imperative.....Mrs. Hall, whose own child experienced reading difficulty in first grade, and Dr. Moats, a reading scientist and teacher educator, combine their wisdom and knowledge to produce a readable, informative, accurate, and above all, practical resource for parents."
Reading through Hall and Moats' book, I was impressed not only by its clear readability, but how adeptly the authors wrote about complex issues associated with reading instruction in such an interesting, attention-holding manner. This latest book on reading is not only helpful for parents, but would also be informative and hold the interest of any elementary education teacher or principal. Especially helpful and unique to this book is Hall's differentiation of the needs of the regular learner as contrasted with the needs of the student with learning disabilities.
The first part of Hall and Moat's book details the larger picture of America's Reading Crisis along with theory and research behind whole language and explicit phonics. Interspersed among these issues is the echoing theme of Hall and Moat's that "teaching a child to read is a shared responsibility between school and parents." The responsible parent as described throughout this book is not just a bake sale parent who reads aloud to his or her child at home, but rather an informed, proactive consumer who assumes the role of COACH at home, who MONITORS his/her child's reading development against benchmarks, and who ADVOCATES if reading development at school is not on track. Information provided throughout this book is designed to help the parent develop skills in those three areas. I found the specific tips and strategies for reading aloud and conversing to children at different stages between 6-9 months, 12-18 months, 2 years of age, and 6-8 years of age practical and well summarized. I always felt as if I had an advantage with my own children after working for so many years with speech and language pathologists because I picked up on so many little tips for natural learning that can be engendered with younger children. Many of those types of tips are presented here.
Moving past this point, the reader soon is introduced to all of the issues behind phonics instruction, phonological skill development, and stages of reading development. Armed with this information, the reader will know whether a specific reading program is phonics or whole language based; whether the phonics is taught well, and how to spot whether one's child is struggling to read.
The second part of this book emphasized activities for each grade starting with preschool through third grade. Word games and activities to develop early reading skills are presented for each of these levels as well as materials and books to use. The authors answer common parental questions such as "Should I push my child to read if he is reluctant?" , "If my child doesn't know a word, do I tell him what it is, or ask him to figure it out", How Does a Child automatically recognize a word? , and "Should I dissuade my child from rereading books that are too easy for him?" After graduating as an elementary education teacher 25 years ago filled with misinformation and inaccurate dogma about reading instruction, I would have found this section helpful in my early teaching years.
The final third of the book addressed reading difficulties and disabilities issues. Red flag signs of learning disabilities, testing issues for dyslexia, questions to ask potential reading tutors, and the eight most common multisensory structured phonics approaches to teaching reading provide helpful information for parents. The emphasis on only multisensory approaches to intensive reading instruction leads to the omission of some validated research-based approaches such as Direct Instruction Reading, and inclusion of any such validated approaches would be my one suggestion.
Some of my favorite books are listed in the recommended lists of books to read aloud to children in different grade levels. Because these past few years I have seen far too many teachers in whole languge classrooms read picture books to first and second graders, I was delighted to see chapter books recommended for oral reading.
Whether a parent is homeschooling, advocating for a phonics-based approach to reading at school, or wondering what the "reading wars" issues are all about, this book will become a well-used resource. The school board member who wonders if his/her district is adequately teaching phonics and the legislator who wants to readily understand what state reading standards and programs should encompass will also find this resource helpful. Parents don't have to accept mediocre reading education!

Massachusetts fourth graders last year took a state-wide comprehensive assessment test (MCAS) and my first grader's school did particularly poorly in English Language Arts. Being a concerned parent, I wanted to arm myself with information about reading/literacy educational methods so I could help improve the teaching going on at the school. While my child already seems to be reading at a high level, I don't want to wait until fourth grade to get an objective assessment and I DO want to provide her an education which allows her to excel.
This is the perfect book for parents who want to help their children to read and help their school to do better in reading instruction. It decodes edu-babble and provides information that can make you an effective change agent for your school. I particularly liked the sections on:
* Background on the differences between whole language and phonics approaches. * A detailed account of the tribulations of reading instruction in California (for all my CA friends) * Ways to determine if your child's teacher is using effective teaching practices. * Benchmark lists to see whether your child is "on track". * A list of warning signs for reading difficulty. * Lists of recommended books scaled by reading difficulty.
I highly recommend this book!
