This is the first one star review I have ever given on Amazon and the first book I have ever thrown in the trash. It is texts like these that turn people off from adopting the principles of 5S and lean manufacturing. While the concepts of 5S are very simple, I felt like I was being talked down to in this book, and personally would feel insulted if I was given this as an employee.

The best way to learn 5S, or teach your operators, is by seeing it in practice and hearing from those on the shop floor who reap the benefits. This book does the exact opposite by reading like some awful wordy generalized employee handbook, written by a systems engineer who is trying to communicate to a technician.

Compared to the "Dummies" book, this one knocks it out of the park. Visually compelling and well-organized. Love this book.

I am a visual learner. If you don't know what that means, it means that you learn by seeing something vs. having it explained to you. So if I'm sitting in a meeting at work and they are talking about a concept, I don't really start to understand it until I it up on a screen, or if I write it down as they are talking about it. Make sense? So if you're like me, you might want to try this book.

I am learning Wordpress right now and have several books..... I bought the Dummies Wordpress book and frankly have been pretty frustrated by it. It's text-intensive and whenever I look up something in the index, it's not there. On top of that, even though it says it's for websites and not blogs, there are still more references to blogs since the author is a big blogger and this seems to be where her preferences lie. I'm going into that book because I'm assuming if you're looking for Wordpress beginners books that's one you might be considering.

So as far as this book goes....

WOW. This is what it must have been like in the 1960s when TV's went from black / white to color. This book is all-color, glossy, with lots of color pictures to help you understand the Wordpress interfaces. Each page is extremely easy to understand... and while it's presented in a visually compelling manner, it's not for "dummies" but instead walks you through setting up hosting and building your Wordpress site. There are lots of "tips" boxes with potential questions for each topic.

A good example is the "Understand Plugins" section on page 206.... it is organized in easy to read text boxes (almost like a website, fancy that!) and walks you through the paragraph-length topics: What is a plugin? Free vs. Paid. Make your own... etc. The next page then tells you how to find plugins and walks you through the exact screens on Wordpress (with photos!!).... then the tips section for plug ins includes a question I have had: "Some plugins have a warning that they have not been updated in over two years. Should I be worried?" The one-sentence answer recommends that yes, you either update the plugin or find one that's been created more recently to take advantage of the latest changes to Wordpress.

This book is so much better than the Dummies book...I am thinking of returning that one frankly. I love this book and wish I would have had it two weeks ago when I first started learning Wordpress. It's not too basic like some Wordpress books I've bought, and it's not too jargon-filled and cluttered (like the Dummies book) and it is so well-organized and easy to find info in.... each page even has a bar with the chapter (on the right page) and the topic (on the left page) so you can flip through the book and quickly find what you're looking for.

I can't rave about this book (as a newbie) enough and would recommend it to anyone starting a Wordpress site (blog or visual site) for the first time. This book knocks it out of the park and after writing this review I'm going to go see if there's a part 2 companion book for more advanced topics like SEO optimization.

An excellent way to learn how to use WordPress for basic blog building

The “Teach Yourself VISUALLY” series has seen considerable improvement since its initial offerings. This volume on the basics of using WordPress is a solid example of the maturation of the series.

First, WordPress Is a tremendously capable and versatile web publishing platform. It can be used to create relative simple blogs, as shown here, to very sophisticated websites. The more sophisticated features are not demonstrated here.

Instead, the reader is presented with a step-by-step illustrated tutorial on WordPress, many of its features and how to create and manage a feature laden blog.

The writing is clear and the visual style is great.

For the beginner who wants a through, albeit basic, education on how to use WordPress, I would recommend this book.

Excellent book for those starting out on Wordpress

The first 60% of this book is devoted to those hosting their site on WordPress.com, installing WordPress on that platform, and the focus is mainly on a site whose primary purpose is blogging. I'm doing none of that, so at that point in the book I felt I had wasted my money on this book. However, from that point forward the book changed gears and gave me a lot of great information that will be valuable to me. It was well laid out too. So I'm still giving it 5 stars.

About the Author
Callum Roberts is the author of The Unnatural History of the Sea, a Washington Post Book of the Year and winner of the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award. A professor of marine conservation at the University of York, he consulted on the Blue Planet series and the IMAX film The Wild Ocean and is a frequent keynote speaker at environmental conferences (including Mission Blue, TED and the Skoll foundation). He advised and was featured in The End of the Line, a documentary on the global fishing crisis and appeared in the National Geographic documentary America Before Columbus. He is on the board of Seaweb and provided the scientific basis for the creation of the world’s first high seas protected network.

The book is excellent. I checked out the book from our public library and found "The Ocean of Life" was such a good resource that I ordered a reference copy for myself from Amazon. Callum has another book titled: "The Unnatural History of the Sea" which describes the changes witnessed in the ocean over time and our 'Shifting Baselines' which we rate the ocean environment by what we see today. Unfortunately we underestimate the wealth of species and abundance due to our present viewpoint. When we can see what the ocean HAD to offer in the past and realize the extent of what we have lost, we can attempt to bring back some of the conditions and wealth of organisms seen in the past. We have been grossly underestimating and over exploiting the resources within our ocean environments for hundreds of years. It is imperative that we create replenishment zones in our world's oceans for the health of our planet and a resource for our use. The goal would be somewhere between 30-40 percent of our oceans closed to fishing and the allowance of the rebuilding of these environments from the bottom up.
Trawl fishing should not be allowed in all environments due to the destruction of the bottom crusts that other animals and plants depend on. The great quantities of waste in the form of discarded dead by-catch needs to be greatly reduced. The ocean has been viewed as too large to be harmed, but we are finding this to be incorrect. We continue to over fish and degrade the ocean environment because it has been done this way in the past. We have the opportunity to allow recovery if areas are protected .

" Although I'd recommend reading both books in tandem

An exhaustive look at the pressures that human civilization are placing on the oceans. An important read. Covers many different topics.

With that said, I found the tone of the writing to be quite apocalyptic (one could debate whether that is appropriate or not based on the circumstances) and the author seems to reject most proposed solutions without really putting too much forward as alternatives. As such, I found the book a little difficult to get through, and a bit depressing (again, that presentation may be justified given the circumstances).

If you are looking for a lighter read on the same subject with proposed solutions, take a look at Sylvia Earle's "The World Is Blue." Although I'd recommend reading both books in tandem.

Still time to save the oceans

It is one of the scariest books I've ever read and one of the saddest. But his descriptions of the problems facing the ocean conform to what I've read in other sources and to things I've seen for myself, so I think it's probably not exaggerated. It's also contains some grains of optimism, in that he describes some reasonable courses that people can take to reduce human impact on the oceans and restore sea life. Whether we will be able to get our acts together to at least partially restore sea life and save some of the world's coral reefs is another matter. If Dr. Roberts is right that's still at least a possibility.

Worthwhile successor to the .hack series

Continuing the .hack//G.U. series, there's not a great deal to say. The plot continues to ramp up at a more steady pace than the revelation-filled second book and the beginning of the novel appears to suffer from some prose that's even weaker than that of the first novel, however that problem alleviates itself as the novel continues.

Readers who are firmly entrenched in the story after volume 2 would read this by default, and continue to the subsequent and final volume 4 without question.

I really love the .hack franchise. and this book was a great read but whats annoying is in all of these books is they tend to reexplain things that they've explained before, not sure why they do this maybe they wanted to up there pg count or that you can start at any book and you would not be to lost in the story line. but other than that its a great book now i just need to buy the other 2 books.
