An Enjoyable Journey

Dr. Ormrod's personal approach to textbook writing makes what would otherwise be just another drab and boring psych book, an actual pleasure. Never in my life prior to this had I tried to reach out to a textbook author, but I did in this case, just to say thanks. The journey through human learning covers conditioning, cognitive approaches, social cultural theory, memory storage, complex learning, motivation and affect. This book is 500 pages of well explained concepts, cited sources and studies that validate the context and a true keeper for the bookshelf. It's pricey, but its one of those books I don't want to give back at the end of this term. Nicely done Dr. O! Nicely done!

Excellent and enjoyable, slight and small formatting issues for digital version

I loved this book. It has a very conversational style which kept me interested and engaged. The only issue was the formatting. The book did not automatically fill up the screen of my Kindle Fire or Iphone and thus I had to zoom in on each page. This was certainly not a deal breaker but a minor annoyance. I learned so much (no pun intended) about learning from reading this book. She uses lots of actual experiments and uses lots of scholarly evidence to support her findings. She is also quite a funny and charming author. Highly recommend!

Excellent text for an undergraduate course

This textbook is a very basic, easy to read book that is great for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in their undergraduate studies. The concepts are presented in a simple and concise manner, and unlike many psychology texts, this one isn't bombarded with names and frivolous details. What you get instead are the key players, and the most important facts of experiments. That's what I like about this book, it's to the point.

Regarding the poor review from the graduate student, I understand where he or she is coming from. I would hate to have this book assigned for a graduate class, due to its elementary nature. However, for an undergraduate student- it presents the most crucial information in layman's terms(seeming to understand that students commonly take 4-5 classes at a time).

For those who are interested in more of a biological/modern neuroscience approach, I would recommend purchasing books by Eric Kandel, instead.

Whether you are a law student or a person with an interest in studying the practical principles behind legal writing, Calleros has so eloquently, yet strategically written this book in such a way that has taken some complicated legal terms, functions, and application of legal theory and breaks the material down into parts that are easier, and less complicated. This book has helped me tremendously--in terms of feeling more confident in my understanding of "Legal Methods and Writing" and, therefore, I have given this book a 5-star rating. In my opinion, having a good understanding is most of the battle of any craft we wish to perfect; the everyday practice of that craft would be the rest!
Thank you, Mr. Calleros, for sharing your knowledge so that others might feel more confident to pursue their legal interests. I am very grateful, and I am glad my professor has selected this book for our class to study.

When asked to return to the field, he agrees, although, because of his disgust with the Department of Tourism (a black-ops branch of the CIA), he plans to feed information to his father, Yevgeny Primakov, the “secret ear” of the UN. But his handlers don’t trust him, either, giving him a series of vetting assignments that culminates in an impossible loyalty test: the abduction and murder of a 15-year-old girl. Ironically, Weaver is then tasked with finding a security breach that threatens the very existence of Tourism—and the lives of the Tourists. Seeing his own brutal compatriots as humans, he does his best to save the thing he despises, a conundrum that pretty much sums up the shades of gray that paint this modern-day espionage masterpiece. The Tourist was impressive, proving that Steinhauer had the ability to leap from the historical setting of his excellent Eastern European quintet to a vividly imagined contemporary landscape. But this is even better, a dazzling, dizzyingly complex world of clandestine warfare that is complicated further by the affairs of the heart. 4 1/2 Stars -- Steinhauer Scores Big Again!

The Nearest Exit is an excellent follow-up to Steinhauer's The Tourist. Like The Tourist, The Nearest Exit represents a first-class combination of complex, intelligent plotting and multi-dimensional characterization. Although, I have to admit that by the end of the first half of the book I was feeling that Steinhauer's latest was going to fall far short of The Tourist in terms of being a well-crafted espionage thriller. Be assured, however, that the second half of the book is so strong that it more than made up for my doubts and concerns about the first half. The Nearest Exit ultimately delivers an exciting story in which Milo Weaver, faced with the end of his quiet, settled life, has no choice but to turn back to his old job as a "tourist." But before being able to do so, he must prove his loyalty. This catapults him into a dangerous position; one in which he must decide between right and wrong, between powerful self-interested foes, between patriots and traitors and between life and death. Be aware that The Nearest Exit, perhaps even more than did The Tourist, requires the reader to use all of his/her mental abilities to help wade through all the layers of deceit and manipulation that must be uncovered to get to the truth. Further, you should be aware that The Nearest Exit may not be the book to read if you are looking to read a story that will have you physically trying to catch your breath in order to keep up with all the action and adventure. I highly recommend The Nearest Exit to anyone that enjoyed The Tourist, as well as to anyone who enjoys a complex, intelligent, moving spy novel in the best tradition of John Le Carre and Len Deighton (at least in their early days), Graham Greene and Alan Furst. I, for one, can't wait to "travel" with "tourist" Milo Weaver on his next thrilling, mentally-challenging, emotionally charged adventure. I suspect I'll have about a year to prepare myself to tour with Milo.

This Is No Tourist

The Nearest Exit is a pretty good spy novel but not in the same league with The Tourist (the book to which this is a sequel).

I will not restate the plot, others have. Suffice it to say that the plot is far less interesting than that of The Tourist. So too are the characters. We get one interesting new person (Ms. Schwartz) but otherwise we get stock - Oskar (her assistant), her boss, Milo's new boss, Senator Irwin - none of them become real to the reader.

The book bogs down in the middle, including two terrible chapters involving Milo, his wife, Rita, and their couples therapist. These are so bad, they are painful (and boring) to read. None of the dialogue seems even slightly real. The chapters should have been omitted entirely and Milo's epiphany (which takes place in the second of the two chapters) placed elsewhere.

The ending is completely unreal but is suitably complex. The last 100-150 pages of the book, and the beginning, are a good deal better than the rest. The ending leaves room for a third book if the author so chooses.

I am not saying don't read the book, I am just saying it disappoints when compared to the book it follows, the superb "The Tourist."

A worthy sequel to an outstanding spy thriller

Having loved The Tourist, I knew that I'd enjoy this sequel, if only to find out what happens to Milo Weaver after he goes on the run in order to clear his name -- and ends up losing his family and his freedom in order to do so. Now Weaver is out of jail and back in the 'Department of Tourism' -- but he's more deeply alienated than ever, and struggling to find a way to do his job in a way that doesn't violate what moral code he has managed to hang on to. The crunch comes when Weaver gets his latest assignment: a kill order for a very unlikely target that he just doesn't understand and can't bring himself to act on.

The plot hangs on that 'kill order', its target and the fallout from Weaver's qualms of conscience -- and it's an excellent and convoluted one, that never left me thinking "yeah, I saw that coming 50 pages ago." Many of the elements that I loved about the first book are still here in abundance -- the nuanced portrayal of characters who are never black and white and always human, such as the German spy who stops off nightly for a bottle of wine and a Snickers bar at her local shop but is quite capable of holding Milo Weaver hostage and using enhanced interrogation techniques on him -- but who later will go out of her way to assist his quest for some kind of justice and retribution for the TRULY villainous. Milo Weaver's world is a gritty, grey one, and even the end of the book doesn't offer much consolation if you're looking for a warm and fuzzy ending to his story. (Perhaps volume #3 in the Milo Weaver saga is in the works?)

I wouldn't suggest reading this book without reading its predecessor. True, the two stories are theoretically able to stand alone, but the characters' actions won't make much sense in isolation, particularly Milo's relationship with his wife and child and his birth father. That shouldn't be a hardship, as the first book is very good, and if you don't enjoy it, you won't like this that much. I've rated this 4.5 stars and rounded down, simply because the plot is even more convoluted, darting back and forth in time and space and character point of view, requiring even more concentration on the part of the reader. (It's not a book to pick up and put down casually, then try to reimmerse yourself in the story hours later...) There are a few loose ends in the plot line -- nothing that really destroys the pleasure of the book, but that can niggle away afterwards.

Highly recommended to spy novel afficionados.

An Excellent Practical Introduction to the Changing Methodologies in Project Management

The project management domain is continuously changing. The actual practice of project management is moving away from the linear traditional project management approach that evolved from the 1940s (basic waterfall) towards a broadening embrace of iterative agile product management processes that have roots in software development.

Perhaps because of this, project management books seem to be generally grouped into one of two buckets: strong in either traditional project management or in agile project management. Additionally, many of the traditional project management books are narrowly directed towards content needed for preparation for the PMP� professional certification exam. But what about readers who are seeking a good practical overview of the practice of project management, including how the different approaches relate to each other and how a practitioner might choose one over the other in particular circumstances? This is where Dr. Wysocki’s book shines. Note: my review is based on the most recent seventh edition of the book.

I came across this book while making a selection for project management texts for a graduate business course I was going to teach. I wanted a text that captured the current dynamic thinking in project management by providing a foundation in the traditional processes while explaining the emerging tools beyond the traditional methodologies. The subtitle of this book says it all: "Traditional, Agile, Extreme."

I actually selected this text to use in my course before this seventh edition was even published. Having reviewed the sixth edition, I correctly assumed that the seventh addition would reflect even more contemporary thinking. I was not disappointed.

The book has 18 chapters organized into five parts:

Part I: Understanding the Project Management Landscape (context for the remainder of the book);
Part II: Traditional Project Management (the scope, plan, launch, monitor and control, and close process groups);
Part III: Complex Project Management (agile, extreme, as well as iterative and adaptive approaches);
Part IV: Managing the Realities of Projects (reducing risk, organizing teams, process improvement, and other topics); and
Part V: End State - Maturing to an Enterprise-Level Project Management Model (enterprise level issues).

Although there is some redundancy between chapters, the book does an excellent job of showing the range of methodologies and processes available in the project management toolkit. Examples are provided on how to use various analysis, tracking and reporting tools and related worksheets. The author spends time looking at the enterprise level of project management too – managing project portfolios, continuous improvement of processes across organizations, and the capture and transfer of learning. If you are considering this book for an academic classroom or for workshops or seminars, the author is extremely accessible and he provides supplemental materials on the book’s website.

The strength of this book is in providing a practical project management overview on how the traditional, agile and extreme methodologies both overlap and differ at the same time. I would not recommend this book as a primary study aid for PMP certification; it does not focus on the cut and dry terminology used in PMI’s Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK) for example (it does follow the same process groups, however). Simply, that is not the purpose of this book.

Wysocki’s Effective Project Management (7th ed) does an excellent job of introducing the wide scope of considerations, techniques and choices that are deployed in the continuously changing world of project management today while doing what few other project management books offer – explaining that project management is not about deploying a static, one-size-fits-all approach or process; it is about choosing what techniques best fit the demands of the specific project to make it successful.

My recommendation: buy this book if you are interested in an excellent overview of project management in its most contemporary forms.

Great book about project management

I have used the previous edition and now I am working with this one for my classes about "Software Project Management" at University. It is a great book about project management and it takes a very interesting point of view focused on a practical view about how to apply project management depending on the kind of project, people, stakeholders...

I like very much how he understands the application of the acronym IRACIS (Increase Revenue, Avoid Costs, Improve Services) for the choice of the whole set of requirements for a project and how to decide the type of project to follow according with these features.

Slides are available too, and they are a very useful tool as a support to my classes

This book was first used as a text in my Foundations course at Brandeis University. Since then, I have bought the updates to it as it is in my estimation the best text out there. This will not exactly prepare you for the PMP exam. For that I recommend Head First PMP by Jennifer Greene.

Anuj Saxena C.P.M., MCCM (Cert.), CPIM, PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt, is an Associate Partner at IBM Global Business Services. Prior to joining IBM, Mr. Saxena was Vice President of Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) Solutions at Alti, Inc., a management consulting firm where he lead multiple SRM and ECM Solution implementations in the US and Europe. Earlier in his distinguished career, he worked for several large consulting firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting, IBM Business Consulting Services, and Deloitte Consulting. His domain expertise includes supply chain management, materials management, sales & distribution, and enterprise asset management.

Mr. Saxena holds a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Masters Degree in Information Systems & Decision Sciences, another Masters Degree in Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and certifications in Purchasing Management, Contract Management, Production & Inventory Management, Project Management and Six Sigma. A must have primer for anyone contemplating the implementation of an Enterprise Contract Management solution for their organization. This book provided me with a very thorough and complete study of what it takes to do ECM right, and how to get the most value out of an ECM solution.

When I was done reading the book I felt ready to tackle just about any issue regarding Enterprise Contract Management. Step by step it walked me through the process.

Historian writing sincerely about his own craft.

The book by Marc Bloch - ''The historian's craft'' - this book shows the limitations of a history as a independent scientific discipline together with its role in the society. Author discusses also the advantages of history, which was his great passion. I really appreciate this book and the author's style of writing. Unfortunately Prof. Bloch did not finish this book, because he sacrificed his life for his own country - he was a scholar and a hero. I do not agree with Prof. Marc Bloch at one point when he claims that human being changes with time. In my opinion this is not the truth and eventually I agree with such figures, like Thucydides and Niccolo Machiavelli.

Marc Bloch--veteran of World Wars I and II, historian, professor, writer, French patriot--entreats us in this spare volume to maintain our objectivity, to interpret history with the skepticism of the journalist and the scientific method of the researcher. He identifies some of the pitfalls, the improperly translated idiom, the anthropomorphism of time and place, and relying too heavily on the written accounts of earlier historians, as means by which the understanding of historical events can be skewed. And history must be viewed as a continuum, a rolling cause-and-effect leading from then until now and beyond, events which seldom fit easily into our need to categorize them by fixed dates. But then, historians already know these things, so of what value is "The Historian's Craft" today?

There is a poignancy to this book that Marc Bloch may not have anticipated from his moment in time, but looking back toward the era in which he wrote, the reader can see "The Historian's Craft" as Bloch's attempt to instill order and sanity into the turbulent and almost inexplicably surreal fall of France during World War II. I interpret this book as his salve, his struggle to maintain objectivity during the madness he observed as the Nazis overwhelmed his country. Older than fifty now, having earned the right to a quiet life in academia but refusing to leave his beloved France, Block joined the Resistance, fought against the Nazis, was captured, tortured and killed. And so, "The Historian's Craft" becomes a record to help us interpret Marc Bloch's life and the era of occupied France, as well as lessons in craft from a learned man.

Bloch wrote: ...a generation represents only a relatively short phase. Longer phases are called civilizations."

Everyone, at least once in their life, has questioned the usefulness of their career. Marc Bloch, a French economic historian, discovered that this moment could be inspired by a mere inquiry: "Daddy, what is the use of history?" Bloch's answer to his son's innocuous question provides the intellectual back-bone to his study: The Historian's Craft. In this book, Bloch's analysis provides students and professional historians alike with a how-to guide to history, but also, probably most importantly, a poignant defense of the craft itself.

Bloch attempts to lift history from its tradition of romantic storytelling, excessive specialization, and its preoccupation with politics, by re-aligning its practices within the broad realm of intellectual inquiry, most importantly science. "There is then," Bloch writes, "just one science of men in time. It requires us to join the study of the dead and of the living." While Bloc concedes that "human actions...elude mathematical measurement," Bloch argues that any intellectual endeavor that explains change over time is historical in its essence. Geology, for example, explains the processes of erosion and plate-tectonics, within the context of time. Thus, understanding the nature of the earth's crust, in relationship to the deteriorating effects of time, is the purpose of studying geology. In contrast to geology, Bloch explains, "it is men that history seeks to grasp." History like many other sciences, are tools for intellectual inquiry. When man is determined to be the subject in question, history, according to Bloch, is the most appropriate tool. The creation of a lake by a man-made dam serves as an excellent example. The inquisitor who is interested in understanding the events that led to the creation of the man-made lake would be better served by analyzing the economic, political, and social phenomena that led to the creation of the dam, rather than the invisible natural geologic processes that led to the creation of the lake. In this sense, history, in comparison to the highly respected intellectual pursuits of hard science, remains an important fixture in intellectual inquiry.

So Bloch has decisively argued that the subject of history is men. But what context should historians study men? Time, according to Bloch, "is a concrete and living reality with an irreversible onward rush." The harsh reality of this constant, influx- producing force provides the logic behind all major historical events. Thus, history cannot merely be a "science of men," or the "science of past," but is instead the "science of men in time," or man's evolution within the context of time. In relation to this, Bloch additionally believes that historians should "join the study of the dead and of the living." While many world leaders would like to make changes to certain contemporary societies, the cultural traditions of a civilization, which pull against reform, are deeply rooted in the fabric of the past. Thus, Bloch argues that man, "remains a more or less willing prisoner," to human institutions that developed throughout history. A historian or even more importantly a world leader that remains unaware of the controlling function of the past, will fail miserably in his or her attempts to improve the future. Likewise, Bloch argues that historians must also be aware of how the present influences our understanding of the past. Bloch believes that "the knowledge of the present bears even more immediately upon the understanding of the past." Bloch states that since historians do their work "backwards," from present to past, a false understanding of the present could lead a historian on a fool's errand in his analysis of the past. Thus, the past and the present, both functions of time, serve as the foundational reference points that all histories should be written from.

Marc Bloch, before The Historian's Craft was released, was captured, tortured, and executed by invading German forces in 1942. His contribution to historical literature and historiography has been immense and influential. The final intellectual testament of his tragically shortened life and the answer to his son's question: "What is the use of history?" has fascinated modern historians and students alike. Ultimately, Bloch left his historiographic masterpiece to future students of history as inspirational guide that acknowledges the characteristics and tactics of history as an intellectual endeavor.
