The Umbrella book for Environmental Physics

This is a fairly new book, and I'm sure there will be complaints about this or that. For instance Smith just touches on the physics equations that govern the processes she explains. But I don't look at this book as a end-source, but essentially as a large "table of contents" for the field of environmental physics.

Smith covers each area, energy, pollution, climatology, and others with an introduction, and then she links each area to fundamental constraints. When I find an area that interests me further, then I head to Jackson, or Pathria, or whatever to get the greater detail.

But what is most important about this book is that Smith maintains her role as a scientist. She doesn't editorialize environmental issues, she simply presents the facts. And she has a depth of knowledge that astounds me. For instance she knew to cover restrictive fluid dynamics in ocean transport ... this is a critical area for cargo ships, yet generally not known to anyone but marine architects.

Smith brings the key component of environmental physics to the table in the opening pages. She astutely points out that physics is the most 'reductionist' of the sciences, where physicists reduce systems to the simplest components for analysis. Unfortunately, this approach can only be half useful for environmental systems, where the whole needs to always be kept in view. This book brings the whole into view.

When the physicists need the details they can then move into the huge structure of conventional physics literature.

For anyone who considers themselves an environmentalist, or an earth physicist, this book is important to read. I found my copy in the library, but I'm probably going to buy a copy to put in my personal reference library because I hope to work in this area when I'm done with my research work.

I am teaching a high school level course called "Introduction to Environmental Physics" and this is the best text available for this class - while it is not detailed enough for a college course, it covers enough subjects well for an introductory course!

About the Author
Barry Hewlett is Professor of Anthropology at Washington State University, Vancouver. He received a Ph.D. from the University of California--Santa Barbara in 1987 and has had appointments at Southern Oregon University, Tulane University, and Oregon State University. He has conducted research in central Africa since 1973 and is the author of INTIMATE FATHERS: THE NATURE AND CONTEXT OF AKA PYGMY PATERNAL INFANT CARE, HUNTER-GATHERER CHILDHODS (edited with Michael Lamb), FATHER, FATHER-CHILD RELATIONS: CULTURAL AND BIOSOCIAL CONTEXTS (Edited), and "Human Behavior and Cultural Context in Disease Control," Special Issue of TROPICAL MEDICINE AND INTERNATIONAL HEALTH (edited with Joan Koss-Chioino). Current research interests include biocultural contexts of infectious and parasitic diseases; the transmission, acquisition, and evolutionary nature of culture; hunter-gatherers; and child development.

Bonnie L. Hewlett worked as a registered nurse in neonatal intensive care before obtaining her Ph.D. degree in anthropology at Washington State University, Pullman. She has conducted research in Gabon, Republic of Congo, and Central African Republic. Her research interests include medical anthropology, adolescent development, hunter-gatherers, and evolutionary cultural anthropology. Recent publications include "Providing Care and Facing Death: Nurses and Ebola in Central Africa" in JOURNAL OF TRANSCULTURAL NURSING, "Vulnerable Lives: Death, Loss, and Grief among Aka and Ngandu Adolescents of the Central African Republic" In HUNTER-GATHERER CHILDHOODS (Barry Hewlett and Michael Lamb, editors), and "Love, Jealousy, and Anger among the Aka Foragers and Ngandu Farmers of the Central African Republic" in LOVE AND INTIMACY ACROSS CULTURES (William Jakowiak, editor). She is currently an adjunct professor of anthropology at Washington State University, Vancouver.

Good book for Intro students

This is a great introduction into what medical anthropologists do in the field. It gives a clear and interesting look into African cultures and epidemic illnesses. I especially like this book because it is readable in the sense that it's not caught up in its own cleverness and bogged down with layers of super-academic speak.

Pretty good read about medical anthropology & Ebola in Africa

I picked up this book because I am interested in infectious diseases, and there do not seem to be many texts on Ebola other than this one. I thought the authors' descriptions of the rapid-killing Ebola epidemics that seem to be on the rise in Africa since Ebola first reared its head in 1976 were fascinating, but I wanted more in the way of scientific/medical research. However, reading about "medical anthropology" was interesting overall, as it is not my field and I knew little about it before picking up this book. Overall, this book is a solid 3-stars.

Sam Deep and Lyle Sussman don't presume to think they've got 101 answers for you. What they do presume, however, is that if you've gotten to where you are already, then you've got the smarts and the stamina to meet your own challenges... and you may just need a little help in analyzing them, choosing the best strategy with which to meet them, and then tracking the outcome of your strategy. And that's what these authors provide: 101 ways to ACT (analyze, choose, track) for 101 different challenges. If you want to be like Warren, read this book by Monish.

I am writing this review as an expression of gratitude to Monish Pabrai for writing this excellent and informative book. The word dhando, which comes from Sanskrit, means “endeavors that create wealth.” “The Dhando Investor” (DI) is described in detail in this interesting and informative book. The DI’s motto is “Heads, I win; tails, I don’t lose much.” Monish Pabrai describes the type of business that fits the DI. It is simple. It is subject to only a slow rate of change. It is distressed in a distressed industry. And, it has a durable moat. The DI wants to buy this business on sale, specifically half-off. Pabrai explains that Wall Street is confused by the difference between risk and uncertainty. He explains that the DI wants a low risk, high uncertainty business.
Pabrai offers extensive illustrations using the Patels, whose heritage was from Gujarat India, but who had migrated to and succeeded in Uganda, only to be expelled by Idi Amin. Only a few thousand came to the USA in the early 70’s, but now half the motels in the US are owned by Patels. They accomplished this feat using the principles of the DI. Pabrai also uses examples from Branson (think Virgin Airlines), Bill Gates, and his own experience.
How does one find such a business? Pabrai gives specific recommendations for places to search for distressed companies. He also discusses Joel Greenblatt’s “Magic Formula," found in "The Little Book that still Beats the Market," in detail. If you want to be a Dhando Investor Pabrai says, “Read voraciously, and wait patiently.” Monish explains that there is no certainty in investing, but with proper investigation and selection one is prepared to make “few bets, big bets, infrequent bets.” Following his advice you will surely emulate his principle of “Heads I win; Tails, I don’t lose much."
I also want to thank Phil Town for telling me about Monish Pabrai’s book. I strongly recommend both of Phil’s books. "Rule # 1 Investing" eloquently explains the principles of value investing as exemplified by Warren Buffet. In "Payback Time" he goes into further detail explaining how to improve your returns.

This book was recommended by Phil Town on his InvestED podcast and it was right on the money (pun intended). Mohnish teaches investing through the story of the Patel family whose patriarch came to the US and spent his life savings to buy a single motel that nobody wanted. He risks it all on this one business, but he is young enough to recover from a loss if he couldn't make it work. His family lives in the motel and does all the work so he is instantly profitable because he has no overhead. He turns the business around and earns a good reputation as an innkeeper, then parlays the profits from that single motel into another one. He continues to bring family members from India to run his expanding motel empire.

We can relate this story to value investing in the modern world: buying a select few, good companies when nobody else wants them. Few, focused, big investments on companies that become undervalued through market fluctuations or bad news.

It's a great read and I highly recommend it.

Exceptional Book on Investing.

This is an exceptional Book on investing. It has a wealth on knowledge and explains
the investment models that Mr. Mohnish Pabrai uses to obtain superior investment returns.
They are the same as the ones used by Mr. Warren Buffette and Mr.Joel Greenblatt
but in his book they are explained in a more indepth and understandable way.
The book is entertaining with many examples of successful applications of superior investment methods.
And the best of this is that they are simple and easy to understand.

Mr Pabrai is gifted in investing, and in writing in a simple and entertaining way.
I highly recommend this book, it clearly explains investment strategies and tactics
that you may find in other books but they are not explained as clearly and easy to understand as in
The Dhandho Investor.

In the still of the night, do not rely on pot luck

Josef Pischel's recent book, Distilling Fruit Brandy, is the clearest book I have seen on this subject. He covers everything from picking to bottling, including fermentation. He is the Director of the Rotholz Agricultural School, and teaches fruit horticulture. This practical book presumes no prior knowledge. The mathematics are simple, few and well explained, nothing beyond 9th grade. The few tools are well presented and are easily used. Unless you get personal instruction, it is the simplest way to get started.

Pischel begins with a solid discussion of his specialty, the fruits and roots themselves. He covers a lot of ground in just a few pages on varieties, characteristics and quality. His basic message is that of a fruit grower: While fermentation and distillation are ancient methods for using overproduction, windfall crops, or seconds not fit for the market, his method strives for the highest quality Schnapps. He will give you tips at every turn to do so. More importantly, he shows you how to avoid the hazards of bad bacteria and other unpleasantness.

If the idea of fermentation seems particularly daunting (it should not), or if you simply want a quick start, jump right to distillation by starting with wine. Otherwise, he moves into various fermentation vessels, their cleaning and care. He takes you through yeasts and bacteria, focusing on the use of the all-important pure select yeast. He shows how to monitor each phase, including temperature. His formatting and presentation of technical topics is the cleanest I have seen. They are a pleasure to use.

Pischel explains the use of enzymes for better flavor, and acids for safer protection. I cannot tell you how important acid is in the quality of life. In taking you through each part of the still, he teaches both principle and process. That brilliant shine of the copper still is not cosmetic. It must be maintained to absorb sulfur and cyanide. Holy Snuffy Smith! You will appreciate the detailed steps he presents for thorough cleaning.

Pischel covers both raw and fine distilling, first quick and the other with a fine tuning touch. He has a section on distilling errors, for when things go wrong. Measuring alcohol and adjusting it finishes the process. He moves into filtration for storage, including bottling. His process does not involve wood barrel aging.

When all the work is done, he relaxes into the pleasant questions of tasting. And not with that age old snifter, but a smaller, stemmed brandy glass with a bell bottom, narrowing neck and flared top.

All this content is displayed in 124 pages. The remainder is on special topics and brandies. The book is published by Schiffer, printed on heavy gloss stock for heavy use. It is hard bound and stitched to lay flat.

This book hits the mark

This is a high quality book in a sea of mediocre texts on distilled beverages. The aim here seems to be the dedicated enthusiast or pro who is willing to take the time to read somewhat technical material in order to render a superb product. The packaging and design of the book are fantastic and well illustrated. I've come to the distilling world from beer brewing and have found many of the popular texts to be either overly kitsch or light on technical information but this book is an exception. I really wish there were more like it.

Ahh that germanic efficiency...

a well written technical manual that takes the "art" out of making booze. no more vague descriptions of how to make spirits, this is a precise and exacting description of how to succeed. if you want artsy, just leave out some steps.

I will say that it does not have much in the way of recipes for brewing, but then the book is called DISTILLING fruit brandy, and that is exactly where it excels.

As a bonus it's not written "over your head" so it's technical but not TOO technical to understand even for a simple American. If you wanna make booze, this is worth the read and should be kept for diagnosing problems or to improve your product.
