Great book

My reading list generally consists of technical manuals. Don't read fiction often. This book was a great read. I loved the techno gadgets mixed in throughout the book. Keep an eye out for the Easter Eggs. They are subtle. As you discover the eggs you can see the depth of development. This is a series of three books, can't wait for the next two to come out. Overall a great read.

Andrew Hunkins' book was a great read. It kept my interest to the last page and I'm looking forward to the next book. It was an interesting, if not somewhat disturbing plot, combining a futuristic/sci-fi backdrop with subtle messaging about our society. I highly recommend it.

The immune system was long believed to be autonomous--unconnected to the brain; Sternberg, a neuroscientist at the National Institute of Mental Health, focuses here on research done over the last few decades that disproves this belief. She methodically details the history of this science--describing, for example, the Nobel prize-winning work of three French scientists who, in 1958, discovered the "interleukins" (molecules that signal between cells), which led to further investigations into how immune cells communicate with the brain, and discussing the seminal but controversial work of Hans Selye, who in the 1950s explored the body's response to stress. Although Sternberg leavens her account with anecdotes and historical snapshots of early medical treatment, her litany of scientific experiments (mostly performed on rats) into the body-mind connection may overwhelm readers without any scientific background. Of greater interest are her reflections on the implications of this research for maintaining health and treating disease. According to Sternberg, physical and psychological stresses--such as prolonged lack of sleep, divorce or social isolation--can make people sick by adversely affecting their immune and hormonal responses. Conversely, a strong belief in healing rituals and prayer may help make them well (via the placebo effect). As inspiring as it is illuminating

I'm an academic bioscientist but not trained in the immune system. I have always been interested in the brain-immune connection (for personal as well as professional reasons), and I have always appreciated getting the history of a scientific field's evolution -- something that we find less and less time to discuss in the college classroom, much to the detriment of the next generation of scientists. I am a huge fan of this book and this year I am incorporating it into my university courses and seminars. I've recommended it highly to colleagues who also find it valuable. It's fun to read and contains fascinating historical notes about medical science in general. Sternberg discusses how the work of many people contributed bits and pieces to an important emerging story. It gave me what felt like an eyewitness perspective on the birth of neuroimmunology, as well as a fountain of information about the brain-immune connection. It is a must-read for anyone wondering how science comes up with "breakthroughs", as well as anyone interested in the topic. Thank you, Dr. Sternberg and colleagues in the field.

Bold and Daring, Advanced Knowledge!

Dr. Esther Sternberg from the outset tells us that she wrote this book "out of a question" that "seemed ostracized from the rest of the scientific community." Clearly, it seems that the information in "The Body Within" is a daring challenge to present new brain-immune connection information to the lay public, and is determined to not let it stagnate only among the doctoral elite. I found all 11 chapters fascinating and richly detailed, gloriously free of slanted opinions and filled with highly intelligent questions. All 250 pages inform, with its interesting anecdotes and illustrations, and my gratitude goes out to Dr. Sternberg for ensuring that some of us, even though we do not have a "Ph.D" attached to our name, are nonetheless able to grasp concepts as the workings of the brain, the immune system and the role of various hormones and neurotransmitters.

As a result, I learned much about neurochemistry and neuroscience from Dr. Sternberg who helped me make irrefutable connections between foods, moods, hormones and neurotransmitters. This means that everything that is taken into the body, or not taken into the body (e.g., starvation diets, which are extremely dangerous), affects how people drive or just behave in general. So there is a definite link between drivers education and neuroscience, although not readily apparent to the layperson. "The Balance Within" is solidly founded in irrefutable facts "collected from rigorously performed experiments." It is a real treat to read about such things as Chapter 5, "It's a Two-Way Street: The Immune System Talks to the Brain and the Brain Talks Back" and Chapters 6 and 7, "When the Brain-Immune Communication Breaks Down" and "Can Stress Make you Sick?" I could easily spoil the conclusions of this book, which I dare not out of pure respect for Dr. Sternberg, especially when she so adeptly investigates such ideas as "Can Believing Make You Well?"

Gradually the walls between the public and the scientific community are crumbling down, allowing us to make up our own minds and deciding what is right for our own bodies. This book is groundbreaking, indispensable and should not be out of your hands for another second. You may encounter resistance at first, as the author put it, "Whenever a new field comes into being, it comes up against the older dogmas. So the resistance that we felt was real and steeped in traditions going as far back as Galileo, Copernicus, and beyond...Whenever one tries to change prevailing opinion, resistance is inevitable..."

Solving The Mind-Body Conundrum

I am a writer who is currently at work on a book on my living through colon cancer. I was diagnosed at age 47 with Duke's C-3 colon cancer. Because of the early onset of my disease, I was three years too young to be considered for routine colon cancer screening, which doctors are supposed to offer to patients when they reach age 50. I was lucky. Even with one year of chemotherapy (due to minor lymph node involvement) medical textbooks and doctors said my chances of surviving five years (a five year colon cancer survivor is considered "cured") were about 35 percent. Now, seven years later, I can say that Esther Sternberg's work validates some key elements of the survival strategy I developed for myself that links health and wellness and emotions.
Sternberg flies in the face of conventional medical wisdom by providing proof that stress can make you sick. She provides evidence that the immune system can be trained, citing the work of Bob Ader and Nick Cohen. And she offers evidence that nerve chemicals or hormones can affect immune-cell function in a physiological way.
This is ironic considering that when you ask a psychiatrist or even a psychopharmachologist how the latest generation of SSRI anti-depression/anti-anxiety drugs (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa etc.) work, the answer is that they are not exactly sure.
The medical establishment in the US tends to hive off the debate about health and emotions (the mind-body connection) to the area of alternative medicine. New age healing and some of the Eastern approaches tend to overlook the scientific connection. Sternberg taps history and science to frame the issue and if it were simpled down to the level of a mass market audience her book would be a best seller.

Compromise, trust, patience and a whole lot of sexiness made Melting Point one spectacular romance.

From the minute we met Gage (Baby Thor) Simpson in Rekindling the Flame and spent more time with him in Flirting With Fire I knew I needed his story. I needed to know more about this out and proud gay fireman who grew up in a foster family that supported him from the day he walked through their doors at age 10 and let them know he was gay. I needed to understand is seemingly always sunny disposition. I needed to see him fall in love and I especially needed to see him let someone else be there for him the way he's always been there for others and in Melting Point we get to see that and so much more and I couldn't be more thankful to Kate Meader and Pocket Books for giving us the chance to really get to know this complex and amazing man. Complex and poignant yet every bit as sexy as I've come to expect from this author Melting Point is not only a necessary addition to this series, it is simply a touching and beautiful love story.

Who knew when Chicago's illustrious mayor, Eli Cooper, introduced Gage Simpson to his former CO, Brady Smith that these two very different men would hit it off so beautifully, well Eli knew and he'd be happy to tell you that? And they did hit off but Brady is scarred both inside and out and his need to control and his need for things to only be his way left Gage no choice but to walk away before his heart broke any more than it already was. Brady knows he messed up but convincing Gage he's ready to try proves to be harder than he expected until an accident leaves them in close quarters and gives them both a chance to try again.

It was really crazy to watch the very dark and much closed off Brady transform once he made up his mind to try with Gage. Gage seems like all goodness and light but his early childhood was not pretty and dealing with a piece of it is taking its toll on him. I appreciated that each of these men had some real issues to overcome and that while it wasn't easy they both began to realize that they could trust one another with pieces of these issues and let the other help them through their struggles. Oh they fought it, they fought it hard but they both also realized that sharing even bits and pieces lightened their load and allowed them to open up their minds to the possibility of more together and eventually opened up their hearts as well.

Gage was well aware of Brady's intimacy issues and body issues and I so admired him for the way he approached things once it became apparent that Brady was ready for more; he was patient yet he pushed just enough to make Brady understand that he had to let go and trust that Gage would be there to catch him. Brady has a whole lot of demons and in addition being somewhat older than Gage and knowing that Gage is well sought after only made his insecurities worse but bless Gage's beautiful heart for understanding and proving that while he COULD have anyone he wanted, the person he wanted was Brady. I think the true turning point though was when Brady realized that Gage needed him as well making him understand that their relationship was definitely a two way street.

While this book had its heavy moments there was lightness to it and many, many laugh out loud moments, mostly thanks to Gage's wit but we also began to see Brady's personality shine and that really was a thing of beauty.

Compromise, trust, patience and a whole lot of sexiness made Melting Point one spectacular romance.

Ring the alarm because Kate Meader has once again turned up the heat in her newest sizzling book, Melting Point. Though this book had sizzling chemistry but what stole and grabbed my attention and melted my heart was the love between two men who found solace, hope, comfort and love within each other.

Kate Meader has been one of those authors that I instantly gravitate to since her writing and storytelling is phenomenal. She has a way of making her readers FEEL for her characters and that's what she did in Melting Point. She made readers understand the meaning and power of love and that is love can heal. And for Gage Simpson and Brady Smith, their journey to the HEA was not an easy feat since they both had strong personalities and different outlooks on life and love. When Gage and Brady first met, the chemistry was so palpable and tangible and readers knew it was only a matter of time for these two to be sizzling up the pages!!!

Brady Smith is the closed off, ex-former Marine and chef of a well-known Chicago restaurant. Brady has always kept his feeling locked up since his past still haunts him mentally and physically. And it was up to Gage to slowly knock down the walls that surrounds Brady's heart and hard exterior. As the the walls slowly comes crumbling down, the love between Gage and Brady can only be summed up as breathtakingly beautiful and passionate.

Melting Point was seductively heartwarming and touching. I loved this sweet and yet fiery hot read as two men who experienced heartbreak found love, passion, solace, comfort, and understanding with each other. Ms. Meader did an amazing job with this novella. She melted our hearts and ignited a burning inferno of sizzling chemistry as Gage and Brady reminded us that love can heal. So if you want to read a scorching sexy love story that is palpable and tangible, then I highly recommend you to read this book.

Let me start by saying I was really torn getting to this book. In one hand, because m/m is not my go to genre, reading this book was not a priority. On the other hand, I was intrigued with Gage’s story. After reading bits about him in Flirting with Fire, I wondered how Meader will get Gage, this over confident Firefighter to get together with a very closed off Chef.

Gage Simpson is a no nonsense kind of guy despite his not so happy childhood. He knew exactly who he is early on in life and owned it with no reservations. Though bullied and abused, he grew up to be a great man. The Dempsey family can take the credit for that. Gage was taken in and loved unconditionally to this day. Now, he is a very dedicated, sexy firefighter looking to get Chef Brady’s full attention.

Brady is damaged to the point of having a relationship would be impossible. His experience while in the military has left him with physical and emotional scars. While his career as a chef keeps him sane, his PTSD prevents him from making a step towards any commitments. But maybe, just maybe, Gage would be enough to push him into taking a chance.

Kate Meader didn’t make an m/m fan out of me or a reader of the genre, but she certainly pulled me closer in that direction. Despite my lack of interest in this genre, I still enjoyed Melting Point. The Romance was well done and believable. Even their background story was nicely covered. I would’ve liked to see more interaction and cameos from Gage’s family though. They are suppose to be very close. I can assume the short length prevented the author from any big family interactions.
A fair warning…the sexual content is descriptive. If you’re not used to m/m sex scenes like myself, brace yourself. There was hunger and carnal need to their love scenes but it was also honest and passionate.

And with that said, Melting Point was a pretty cool read. A stand alone but I advise to also read Flirting with Fire simply because it was awesome.

About the Author
Ralph Earle served as professor emeritus of New Testament at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, where he first began teaching in 1945. He served on the Committee on Bible Translation, which is the governing body for the New International Version of the Bible. Earle earned degrees from Eastern Nazarene College, Boston University, and Gordon Divinity School. He also took post-doctoral courses at Harvard and Edinburgh Universities.

Used this for a study with my church small group. They all raved about how much they learned, how it helped them and how they felt they could better engage others on the topic. Ralph Earle is a deep scholar, yet is able to communicate deep ideas in the language of the everyman.

A beautiful to hold

A beautiful to hold, beautiful to look at, and beautiful to read monograph on Aalto. If you are looking for a slick large-format book full of detailed photos I might look elsewhere, but the archival material, artful new photos, and especially the fascinating essays make for a wonderful book.

More Boring To Read Than Textbook

This was my most anticipated book to buy for 2014 after witness the failed attempt by Robert McCarter earlier that year, and my stubborn refusal to pay $300 dollars for 3 overpriced black and white Xerox copies by Birkh�user. Unfortunately my principle and patience didn't payoff that year, and my dream of hoping to buy a better Aalto book than Richard Weston's version was shattered like the snow globe that I accidentally dropped at Strand Bookstore.
The book was small in page format with about 75% text and we are talking about a 648-page volume. It has more text per image than a Kenneth Frampton's architectural theory book. The rest are drawings and normal at best photographs. Don't be fooled by the four semi-decent images they show on Amazon because that's probably the best images throughout the whole book.
I was going to put the book back on the shelf and walk away without saying anything, but I soon realize that's ethically wrong because some poor student or intern might spend $60 of their hard earn money on it and expect lots of drawings and beautiful photographs than an overpriced furniture brand on the cover. So, I decided to share my humble personal opinion. And of course, I do not speak for those who enjoys reading phone book.

The abstract reflections of theologians and philosophers have often had little impact on the work of practicing business managers. [O'Brien, Collier, and Flanagan's] Good Business, seeks to bridge that gap and is a welcome addition to the project of applying the principles of the Catholic social teaching to the challenges of business. The authors provide a useful summary of basic concepts (such as human dignity, the common good, justice, subsidiarity, and solidarity) and survey some of the issues that surround them. But beyond that they do a rare thing, which is to make a serious and determined attempt to explain how these basic concepts might play out in the practical management of business enterprises. They provide thoughtful reflection illustrated by a set of case studies that helps to ground theory in application. The result is a thought-provoking volume for anyone interested in bringing the Catholic social tradition to the world of business.
